CIOL members are at the heart of everything we do.
Our member networks are run by members, for members, and offer a unique opportunity for language practitioners to come together to network, share ideas, offer support and guidance, participate in professional development activities, share news and updates and to simply meet socially.
Freelance language practitioners typically work mostly in isolation so our divisions and societies offer members the chance to meet up with like-minded individuals, to share experiences, make friends and extend professional networks.
CIOL specialist divisions
All CIOL members, irrespective of grade, have the opportunity to join one (or more) of three specialist divisions, all managed by CIOL members on a voluntary basis:
Business, Professions and Government Division (BPG)
The diversity of the BPG Division is its strength as it welcomes all language practitioners working in industry, commerce, government and the professions (e.g. law, accountancy, engineering). Learn more
Interpreting Division (ID)
ID represents interpreters working or with an interest in many different interpreting sectors, including conference, public service and business interpreting, using liaison, simultaneous and consecutive interpreting modes. Learn more
Translating Division (TD)
TD is currently the largest of the three specialist member-run divisions and welcomes CIOL members who are professional translators as well as student and affiliate members interested in a career in translation. Learn more
CIOL local societies
In addition, all CIOL members can meet with a member-run local society (or network) which offers social and professional development events for all linguists in a defined geographical location.
CIOL events
We have a very busy events calendar including the annual CIOL Conference, which incorporates the renowned Threlford Lecture.
Supplemented by events and activities organised by our divisions and societies plus our CPD programme which includes webinars, there is bound to be something going on to suit your professional needs.
