The challenges of translating sport

Translating about sports poses an array of challenges, including terminology, style and audio quality. Translators must have a deep understanding of a particular sport to be able to grasp the advanced concepts to adhere to a professional standard.

Our speaker Jae Marple MA AITI will cover challenges posed by sports translation and what a translator needs to know to be successful in this field.

Jae Marple is a French, Spanish and Portuguese to English translator specialised in sport, tourism and international development. Jae's sports work is mostly related to football and darts, and to a lesser extent, to rugby union. He mostly transcribes press conferences and interviews with players and managers before Champions League games and for football documentaries, and translates darts articles and product productions descriptions for darts retailers. His sports translation portfolio also includes a beginner's guide to the Spanish racquet sport padel, texts about rugby-themed tourism in the South of France and materials related to the 2024 World Cup, and web copy related to sports clothing and equipment and the Paris 2024 Olympics. Jae also does the odd football interpreting assignment, having worked most notably at Old Trafford and St' George's Park.
