CIOL at the Language Show Scotland

The Language Show Live opened its doors for the first time at the weekend in Scotland, and CIOL was among the exhibitors at the inaugural show north of the border.

CIOL’s Head of Membership Jane Galbraith and Business Development Manager Matthias Postel were there to speak to visitors about membership and professional qualifications and how together they can enhance the careers of linguists. Jane and Matthias were supported by members of CIOL’s Scottish Society who kindly gave their time to help out on the stand.

During the show, Matthias delivered a presentation on the value of languages at work, focusing on the organisation’s new qualification, the Certificate in Languages for Business, aimed at schools, colleges and universities, and also spoke in the Careers Forum on Careers in Translation and Public Service Interpreting.

CIOL member Jaquelina Guardamagna delivered a presentation on inspiring confidence and enhancing credibility as a linguist. Sue Leschen, also a CIOL member,  held a session on Confidentialtiy Issues for Freelance Interpreters and Translators in which she talked about CIOL’s Code of Professional Conduct, a code designed to afford protection to both CIOL members and their clients.

A major event during the show was the workshop Translating Europe: Young People in Translation, hosted jointly by the EU, CIOL and ITI. There was standing room only for this panel discussion of young people making their way successfully in the translation sector, as they outlined their career paths and gave advice to aspiring translators.

CIOL will be back at the Language Show at London's Olympia in October.
