IoLET Affiliate membership – FAQs

The membership grade IoLET Affiliate was created specifically to support:

  • candidates preparing for an exam with CIOL Qualifications (either with a course provider or independently), and
  • candidates intending to register for an exam with CIOL Qualifications who are not already in a paying grade of CIOL membership.

The Registered Student grade was withdrawn on 31 August 2016.

All CIOL Qualifications candidates must first become an IoLET Affiliate prior to entering for their exam, unless they are already in another paying grade of CIOL membership (Career Affiliate, Associate, Member or Fellow).

Candidates not registered with CIOL either as an IoLET Affiliate or in another membership grade will not be able to enter for their CIOL Qualifications exam.

To assist members and exam candidates, we have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions. Should you need further guidance please do not hesitate to contact the membership team on +44 (0)20 7940 3146.

Why do I have to join CIOL as an IoLET Affiliate?

We have introduced this requirement in order to better support exam candidates as they prepare for their exam(s).

We will do this by offering a range of benefits such as free access to a selection of exam papers, source texts and examiners reports. You may also be able to access a number of exam specific webinars and claim a discount on the fee payable.

You will also receive a range of other benefits including a free digital copy of the CIOL’s professional journal The Linguist. On successful completion of your qualification you will automatically be eligible to upgrade to Career Affiliate or a professional grade of membership (depending on the qualification taken and your work experience).

The requirement to register with CIOL as an IoLET Affiliate came into effect on 1 September 2016. You must be a CIOL member in order to enter for a CIOL Qualifications exam, whether you are part-way through a qualification or taking the exam(s) for the first time. You will be asked to quote your CIOL Number – which is issued to you when you become an IoLET Affiliate – on the exam form.

What are the benefits?

The exam preparation resources have been designed to support you as you prepare to take your IoLET exam(s), with access to:

  • Examiners' Reports
  • Past papers (availability varies by language)
  • Source texts (DipTrans)
  • Sample papers
  • Seminar documents (DipTrans)
  • Resources for the DPSI

In addition you will also receive access to a range of benefits and services associated with being a CIOL member including:

  • A free digital copy of The Linguist, CIOL's professional journal (produced six times a year)
  • Discounts on professional services through CIOL’s Advantage scheme
  • Access to one or more of CIOL's three professional divisions – Translating, Interpreting and BPG (Business, Professions and Government), which all provide unique face-to-face networking events and online forums.

How do I access my benefits?

In order to complete the IoLET Affiliate submission form you will be asked to create a website account; this becomes your website login. Once your IoLET Affiliate submission has been processed, you will receive notification of your CIOL membership number via email. You will then be able to access your exam preparation resources by using your website login. Our monthly Members' enews will be sent automatically to your inbox and will include a link to The Linguist online, along with details of CIOL national and local events and CPD training and exam workshops.

What happens to my membership after the exam results are issued?

As an IoLET Affiliate you will be part of a respected professional network of practising linguists.

On completion of your qualification you can appy to be automatically upgraded to Associate (ACIL) level of CIOL membership with a 25% discount on the first year's membership fee. Those who meet the criteria for full Member will be eligible to upgrade and will be on the pathway towards Chartership, and will be eligible for an entry on CIOL's directory, Find-a-Linguist.

How long will my membership last?

The term of membership is 12 months from the date you became an IoLET Affiliate.

Entering for the exam(s) is a separate process so please check the qualifications section of this website for details of the exam registration dates and to access the exam entry form.

Remember you will need to quote your CIOL Number on the exam entry form.

I think I may be eligible to join CIOL in another grade of membership. What do I need to do?

First of all read the membership PDF icon admissions criteria to determine which grade of membership best suits your circumstances. Membership eligibility is normally based on the qualifications you hold and your work experience.

If you believe you meet the entry criteria to join in another grade of membership then you can apply by completing the application form and submitting this with the evidence to support your application and an assessment fee of £25.00.

Please note you must be in a paying grade of membership in order to enter for a CIOL Qualifications exam as you will be asked to quote your CIOL Number on the exam entry form.

If you are seeking admission to CIOL either as a Career Affiliate or in a professional grade of membership within two months of the exam entry closing date, please contact the membership team for further guidance.

Can I take a CIOL Qualifications exam without being a CIOL member?

No, you need to be an IoLET Affiliate (or higher grade) member in order to enter for our exams.

If you are already a CIOL member (in a paying grade of membership) then you won’t need to become an IoLET Affiliate. Simply quote your CIOL Number on the exam entry form.

All members must quote their CIOL Number on the exam entry form.

You can use our member check to find out your CIOL Number.

I’ve passed some, but not all, units of my qualification. Do I need to become an IoLET Affiliate in order to complete it?

Yes, you still need to become an IoLET Affiliate.

Remember you will need to quote your CIOL Number on the exam entry form.

I’m registered with a preparatory course provider but have not yet taken any exams; do I need to join as an IoLET Affiliate?

You need to be an IoLET Affiliate (or other higher grade of membership) in order to enter for an IoLET exam.

However, you can join at any time as the benefits are designed to support your exam preparation. Your membership must be active at the point you register for the exam(s).

What happens if I join and then don’t take the exam(s)?

If CIOL Qualifications is unable to offer the exam or you are not able to take the exam due to illness or other extenuating circumstances (as agreed by CIOLQ), your IoLET Affiliate membership will be suspended and then resumed once you are ready to take the exam. The membership fee will not be refunded. Please refer to the full terms and conditions (see below).

What are the terms and conditions?

  • IoLET Affiliate membership is for a period of 12 months from the date the application is processed.
  • Eligibility: applicants must be preparing for a CIOL Qualifications exam and/or intending to enter for one.
  • The membership fee is non-refundable. In the following scenarios, membership will be suspended and restarted once you wish to enter for the exams:
  1. CIOL Qualifications is unable to offer the exam
  2. You are unable to take the exam due to illness or other extenuating circumstances (agreed by CIOLQ)
  • IoLET Affiliate members agree to abide by the CIOL code of professional conduct.
  • IoLET Affiliates understand that on successful completion of their qualification, they can apply to be automatically upgraded to Associate (ACIL) level of membership with a 25% discount on the first year's membership fee. Those who meet the criteria for full Member (MCIL) will be eligible to upgrade.
  • CIOL reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions and to add, delete or modify benefits without further notice. Whilst every effort will be made to bring you the full range of benefits associated with this grade of membership CIOL and CIOL Qualifications will not be held responsible for any benefits that are not available.

Why do I have to agree to comply with the CIOL code of professional conduct?

All CIOL members, irrespective of grade, are asked to adhere to the CIOL code of professional conduct. CIOL members form the largest network of practising and aspiring linguists and together we have a duty to uphold and maintain standards, in order to raise the status of language professionals worldwide.

If I’m an IoLET Affiliate member do I still need to complete an exam entry form?

Yes you do. Joining CIOL as an IoLET Affilliate does not mean you have automatically entered the examination(s). You must complete an examination entry form for the units you wish to enter. You must include your CIOL number on the form as this will be cross-checked by the exams team when processing your entry form.

I’m already a CIOL Student Affiliate; do I need to register as an IoLET Affiliate?

If you intend to sit a CIOL Qualifications exam, you need to become an IoLET Affiliate before you submit your exam entry form as you will be asked to quote your CIOL number on the form. If you are already in another paying grade of CIOL membership you do not need to join as an IoLET Affiliate; simply quote your CIOL number on the form.

What is the fee and why am I being charged?

If you are part-way through your qualification and still have units to take in order to complete it, then you must register as an IoLET Affiliate, before you enter for your exam(s), but you will be exempt from the £25.00 annual fee for the first 12 months.

If you have yet to take any exams then the fee to become an IoLET Affiliate is £25.00 and this is payable when you join CIOL. Your membership will be active for 12 months from the date you join.

We are charging this nominal fee so that we can bring all IoLET Affiliates a range of benefits designed to support your exam preparation and to give you access to the wider range of benefits and services associated with CIOL membership.

What happens once I have taken my exams?

You will receive your exam results approximately 12 weeks after the exam was taken. Please check the CIOL website for details of when the exam results will be released as this may vary depending on the examination.

If you have successfully completed your qualification, then you will be eligible to automatically upgrade to Associate (ACIL) level of CIOL membership.

Depending on the qualification you have completed and your work experience, you may also be eligible to upgrade full Member (MCIL).

What happens if I fail my exams?

When you re-enter in order to complete your qualification you will need to be in CIOL membership. If you are not already in a paying grade of membership you will need to join or re-join as an IoLET Affiliate. On successful completion of your qualification you can apply to be automatically upgraded to Associate (ACIL) level of membership with a 25% discount on the first year's membership fee.

I am still unsure.

Please contact the membership team on +44 (0)207 940 3146 to discuss.
