Latin didn’t die – today we call it Romanian

Unfortunately, this event is now fully booked. If you would like to join the waiting list, please email midlands@ciol.org.uk.

Third in our series of events that focuses on a specific country and its national language, we introduce participants to Romania, its history, culture, personalities, language and literature.

Speakers of French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian will find aspects of Romanian to be familiar – they share a common Latin heritage - and yet intriguingly different at the same time. Highlights of this fast-moving, interactive event include:

  • a lightning tour of Romania and some of its eminent characters by Lavinia Cinca from the European Parliament
  • introductory exercise in Romanian with Daniela Muteş of the European School, Brussels
  • readings from the work of renowned Romanian author Mircea Eliade in Romanian with English translation
  • a live link to the Transylvanian Book Festival at the Romanian Cultural Institute, where Susan Curtis, publisher of Istros Books will share her considerable experience of bringing Romanian works to an English-reading audience.

Plenty of time for questions and discussion with our guests. All CIOL members are welcome, and non-members with an interest in Romanian are also welcome to request a place at the event. All attendees will receive the Zoom link prior to the event.
