On 10 May 2025 members of the Lincolnshire Society met at the Wig & Mitre in Lincoln for their Spring meeting, passing through a bustling Castle Square, where cyclists prepared for the Rapha Lincoln Grand Prix (pictured below), on their way to the venue.
Over a delicious lunch members discussed topics taken from The Linguist Issue 64/1 (Spring 2025), ranging from the importance and position of languages within our present culture, society and economy to the evolving role and importance of the professional linguist. This led on to the subject of a TransNet discussion forum about translation workload and prices. AI, online language learning and the work of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages (with its recent Challenge to encourage MPs to learn a foreign language) were discussed too.
Later in the session one of the group who is an accountant answered members’ queries regarding tax concerns.
Members also looked back over the twenty-seven years of the Lincolnshire Society’s existence since it was re-formed in 1998. Candia Hillier reflected on her two years as its Secretary in the beginning, followed by twenty-five years as its Chairman and the changes that had occurred over that time. She thanked all the attendees for their support.
