Why English Recognition Matters for Chinese Professionals

Why recognition of high quality spoken English matters for Chinese Professionals: A conversation with CIOL Head of Membership Dom Hebblethwaite and Professor Saihong Li.

China’s global influence continues to expand. From international trade and technology partnerships to academic research and cultural exchange, Chinese professionals are working across borders more than ever. In these settings, English is often the language that connects people and enables collaboration.

For many professionals in China, English is not a first language, but it is a vital working tool. It is used every day in meetings, negotiations, presentations, and global projects. Yet there has been little opportunity to formally demonstrate this skill unless you hold academic certificates or work as a translator. The Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) is changing that.

To explore why recognition matters, Dom Hebblethwaite, CIOL Head of Membership, spoke with Professor Saihong Li of the University of Stirling, an expert in multilingual communication and intercultural business.

English as a Professional Asset

Dom:
Professor Li, China’s professionals are increasingly active on the global stage. English often plays a central role in these interactions. How do you see this in your work?

Professor Li:
English is essential in international collaboration. Chinese professionals use it every day to negotiate contracts, present research, and manage cross-border teams. The challenge is that while their English is strong, there is rarely a formal way to show that on a CV or LinkedIn profile unless they have academic qualifications. CIOL provides a solution.

CIOL Certified English: Practical Proof of Ability

Dom:
And what about CIOL Certified English?

Professor Li:
It is a practical way to demonstrate spoken English. Certified English focuses on real communication, the kind you use in meetings and discussions, not exam-style language. For Chinese professionals, this is important because it reflects how you actually work. Rather than simply claiming 'I speak English,' you can demonstrate your level with evidence. Combined with Career Affiliate membership, it provides both evidence of ability and professional status.

Why CIOL Career Affiliate Membership Matters

Dom:
How does CIOL Career Affiliate membership help?

Professor Li:
It gives professionals the recognition they deserve. This is not about being a translator or interpreter. It is about acknowledging English as a professional skill. Career Affiliate membership validates years of learning and practice. It signals to employers and partners that your English meets international standards. That is a clear advantage in a competitive market.

For professionals working across borders in law, finance, healthcare, or engineering, English is often central to how they operate internationally. They lead global projects, negotiate international deals, and represent their organisations worldwide. CIOL Career Affiliate membership makes that expertise visible.

The Impact of Recognition

Dom:
What difference does this recognition make?

Professor Li:
It builds confidence and credibility. When you are leading a global project or applying for an international role, CIOL recognition removes uncertainty. It shows your English is not just functional, it is professional. That can make a real difference in career progression and global opportunities.

A Message to Chinese Professionals

Dom:
What would you say to Chinese professionals who use English every day?

Professor Li:
If English is part of your work, make sure it is recognised. You have invested time and effort to master it in professional settings, often under pressure and across cultures. CIOL Career Affiliate membership confirms that your English meets recognised professional standards and gives you respected professional status. CIOL Certified English adds practical proof of your spoken ability, showing how you communicate in real business situations. Together, they strengthen your profile and help you stand out in an international market.
