Study Languages at Swansea University

Modern Languages at Swansea University is ranked 5th in the UK in the Guardian League Table, and offers a range of undergraduate pathways that combine language study with cultural, social, and professional training, and which are designed to support students with different interests, strengths, and aspirations.

In addition to various Joint Honours options, Swansea's core undergraduate provision includes:

Post-A  level or ab initio, students can choose from options that currently  include French, German, and Spanish. Mandarin Chinese can also be studied from beginners’ level, with additional options in Italian, Portuguese and Catalan also available. Regardless of their background, Swansea's degree structures allow students to broaden their linguistic profile in their chosen language(s) whilst being supported with research expertise in translation and interpreting, pedagogy and second language acquisition, as well as cultural studies.

Swansea’s postgraduate provision includes the brand new MA Translation and Intercultural Communication which offers an Interpreting pathway, as well as a Technological pathway, and students can undertake an Internship in industry instead of the traditional Dissertation. This MA degree offers a dynamic, future‑facing programme designed for linguists eager to thrive in today’s fast‑evolving global language industries.

Across all programmes and pathways, students benefit from:

  • Small-group language teaching with a strong focus on active participation
  • Classes with native speakers
  • Exemplary pastoral support covering mental health, neurodivergence, as well as the more general transition to Higher Education
  • Global Lounge Language Cafés
  • 100% satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey, 2025

Swansea recognises that students and teachers value clarity when comparing degree options and they are always happy to talk to teachers or applicants directly about individual profiles, their flexible and holistic entry requirements, combinations of subjects, or pathways into languages at university. Prospective students can also chat to current students on languages programmes through Swansea's UniBuddy platform.

Where  appropriate, they are also more than happy to offer A-level masterclasses, aspiration-raising talks or contribute to events that support language uptake and progression across the different Key Stages such as thier recent Festival of Languages.
