MA Translation & Intercultural Communication (MATIC) at Swansea University

Swansea University offers an innovative range of language and translation programmes at BA and MA level that combine academic excellence with industry‑focused training, preparing students to excel in an increasingly interconnected world.

Focus on the MA Translation and Intercultural Communication (MATIC)

Swansea’s MA Translation and Intercultural Communication (MATIC) offers a dynamic, future‑facing programme designed for linguists eager to thrive in today’s fast‑evolving global language industries. What truly sets MATIC apart is its strong professional and international focus.

Building on more than three decades of excellence in translation studies, the degree combines rigorous academic training with cutting‑edge technological skills, from computer‑assisted translation and machine‑translation post‑editing to localisation, transcreation and audiovisual translation. Students benefit from hands‑on access to industry‑standard tools, including RWS Trados Studio, memoQ, Phrase, ZOOsubs and ZOOdubs alongside opportunities for free professional software certification.

Flexible study pathways allow learners to specialise in Professional Translation, Interpreting, or a blend of both, while additional modules in areas such as simulated translation bureaux, information mining and specialised translation further enrich the learning experience.

Extended Options

The programme also offers an Extended MA option with the possibility of studying abroad or adding further specialisation, as well as opportunities to expand linguistic repertoires through beginner and intermediate language modules.

Students may opt for a 12‑week industry internship in the UK or abroad or pursue a Double MA with Université Grenoble‑Alpes, graduating with two master’s degrees and valuable cross‑cultural experience.

Flexible, Internationally Focused Education

Swansea University’s BA Modern Languages and BA Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting offer a flexible, internationally focused education in French, German and Spanish, supported by research‑led teaching across language, translation, interpreting, pedagogy, and cultural studies. They also offer ab initio opportunities in Italian, Catalan, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese.

Students benefit from year‑abroad opportunities at partner universities, work placements and British Council assistantships, gaining valuable real‑world experience. Specialist modules such as Computer‑Assisted Translation and Simulated Translation Bureau help build industry‑ready skills, while language cafés, societies and cultural initiatives create a vibrant, supportive community.

These programmes equip graduates with strong linguistic proficiency, intercultural awareness and versatile professional skills for careers in translation, interpreting and the wider global workplace.
