CIOL's Lincolnshire Society Networking Lunch and Discussion

A glot of linguists met in person at the Wig & Mitre in Lincoln on Saturday 15 November 2025, with the addition of an online link for one member’s attendance. Various topics from The Linguist Autumn 2025 (Issue 64/3) were discussed throughout the meeting, ranging from the future of language learning (‘Languages future’, ‘Supporting inclusion’ and ‘Battle of the apps: round 2’) to  the issue of AI translation (‘Inside Parliament’) and the topic of how we deal with the language of the past when translating to a different language (‘Transversing time’). The discussions moved on to ‘Centring Empathy’ and then to the origins of English collective nouns (‘A naming of nouns’), also comparing their numbers with those in foreign languages.  

Advice was offered to members about mentoring for students beginning a career in languages. As always, the meeting was very relaxed, interesting and enjoyable, partnered with delicious food.
