The Scottish Child Interview Model was developed to improve the quality and consistency of Joint Investigative Interviews for children and young people who are victims or witnesses of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or violence. Using a trauma-informed, evidence-based approach and specialist interviewer training, it aims to gather high-quality evidence while reducing the need for children to give evidence in court and minimising further trauma. This session will explore key improvements in the forensic interviewing of children in Scotland and their impact on practice.
The session will also highlight how valuing and embedding linguist expertise plays an important role in improving outcomes, upholding children’s rights, and helping professionals better meet the communication needs of child victims and witnesses when interpretation services are required. Through collaborative working and ongoing service improvement, the session will demonstrate how effective communication support can help ensure that every child’s voice is heard and understood.
A presentation and interactive discussion led by the National Joint Investigative Interviewing (JII) Team. Speakers include Jennifer Morrison, Social Work Manager; Jillian Ingram, National Implementation Coordinator; and Detective Inspector Donna Roby, who are key leads within the collaborative partnership between Social Work Scotland, Police Scotland, and COSLA (Convention of Scottish Local Authorities).
Drawing on their respective professional roles and experience, they will share how working in partnership with linguists and interpretation professionals across Scotland is helping to improve practice in Joint Investigative Interviews. The session will explore how strengthening communication support for children who require interpretation services can help ensure that every voice matters, upholding children's rights and enabling their experiences to be heard and understood.
