‘Researching Multilingually’: Languages as Social Category and Performance Art

Book online

Researching Multilingually brings languages into view alongside the social categories of race, gender and class. It allows us to ask the question: ‘What difference does it make that my language(s) is/ are not yours, that my inflections are not yours? And what does it mean to take this seriously as a factor in our research methodologies.

Prof. Alison Phipps will take stock of the work undertaken by the AHRC funded project Researching Multilingually at Borders and will present some of the work and theorisations in the autoethnographic book Decolonising Multilingualism. It will offer examples from around the world and present challenges to our dominant northern epistemologies and methodologies in the broad field of language studies.
