CIOL (the Chartered Institute of Linguists) is delighted to announce that Judith Gabler FCIL CL was elected as its new Chair at the CIOL Council meeting held in London on 21 July 2018. This is a voluntary role, leading Council in defining CIOL’s strategic objectives and monitoring their implementation, and providing leadership to the organisation.
Judith has been a member of CIOL since 1997 and is a Fellow and Chartered Linguist. She is the first CIOL Chair to live and work outside the UK, having moved to Frankfurt in 1984 as a graduate of Manchester University.
Judith started with RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), her current employer, in 1995 and has held several senior management positions in Europe while travelling widely throughout the region.
“I am deeply honoured to have been elected as Chair and will build on the solid foundations set by my predecessor and guiding force, Karen Stokes. My aim is to ensure we achieve the Strategic Plan set by Council, an ambitious and exciting agenda which will service the needs of our diverse and talented membership while at the same time ensuring a strong legacy for future generations. CIOL has a huge role to play in inspiring trust, confidence and what it means to be a language professional in a global world. I am highly motivated and energised by the prospect of playing a leading role with the Executive and Council in achieving this” said Judith.
We would like to thank out-going Chair Karen Stokes FCIL CL for her hard work and dedication during her time in office. As Chair, Karen offered her wholehearted support to CIOL staff and members, and took a very active role in the work of the membership team, as well as the organisation as a whole, taking every opportunity to represent CIOL at conferences and events. We look forward to continuing to work with Karen in her role as Member of Council.
Karen said "It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve as Chair of Council during an exciting period for CIOL, as we have grown to an organisation of over 7,000 members, established an ambitious strategic plan, modernised our processes and strengthened our provision of high-quality CPD for members worldwide, through the acquisition of eCPD Webinars. I am truly delighted at Judith's election as Chair. She brings a unique combination of skills and experience and I look forward to offering her my full support while I remain on Council."
Judith’s role will be supported by two newly elected Vice-Chairs: Alistair Bell ACIL and Dr Reza Navaei FCIL CL.
CIOL Chief Executive Ann Carlisle added: “It is remarkable to find two such talented individuals as Karen and Judith to serve successively as Chair of Council, both prepared to give of their time, energy and outstanding flair for leadership in this voluntary role. Karen has guided Council through an intensive period of transition and this has set the context for our ambitious future plans which I look forward to realising together with Judith. Having both a Chair and one Vice-Chair based outside the UK will bring an extra dimension and flavour of internationalism to Council as well as delivering the standpoint of overseas members directly to the Council table.”
