On 28 July, CIOL was delighted to welcome to London senior officials from SFSC (Shanghai Foreign Service Company) in China.
SFSC's International Training Centre acts as an examination centre in Shanghai for IoLET's professional qualification for translators, the Diploma in Translation, and as a base for the recently launched CIOL China Association, a new regional society for linguists in China.
CIOL Chief Executive Ann Carlisle hosted the meeting at the organisation's Farringdon office, together with CIOL Chair Karen Stokes, IoLET Chair Professor Chris Pountain, Head of Membership Jane Galbraith, and other members of CIOL staff.
SFSC's Board Director Mr Chen Jieping was accompanied by five senior officials from SFSC.
Chris Pountain opened the meeting by welcoming the visitors and presented a plaque showing key dates in CIOL's history. Ann Carlisle and Jane Galbraith presented on activity at CIOL and the growing future relationship between the two organisations.
Vice General Manager of SFSC's Hongqiao Business Centre Ms Fang Jingyi gave a presentation on the company's very successful activities in outsourcing HR and training services since its establishment in 1984. An award-winning company, SFSC has provided services for 1.25 million employees in over 25,000 enterprises.
Through Vice Director Yi Yuan acting as interpreter, Mr Chen expressed his appreciation of the very valuable collaboration with CIOL. He presented a gift of a splendid bronze plate etched with two horses, explaining that in China, the horse is a symbol of success, and the two horses represent the success of the CIOL-SFSC collaboration.
The first SFSC candidates sat the Diploma in Translation in Shanghai in 2008, and the number of candidates has been rising year on year. CIOL is looking forward to the future availability of the Diploma in Translation exam across China.
Following the meeting, CIOL staff accompanied their guests for lunch on a Thames river boat trip.
Ann Carlisle said "We were delighted to host this visit from SFSC, an organisation which is very keen to support CIOL and IoLET's expansion in China. It was a good opportunity to build and strengthen our relationship as well as to set out plans for future collaboration. Having received outstanding hospitality during our visits to Shanghai, we were pleased to be able to showcase a little bit of London over lunch, as this was the first trip to London for the group."
