German Society

The German Society was founded in 1987 and has been successful in providing a useful network of contacts for its dispersed and very varied membership. To keep in touch with our members we issue a newsletter about four times a year and have these pages on the CIOL site.

We start the year with our AGM around March and make the most of this get-together by combining it with a Members' Session where language and other issues of general interest are discussed.

An annual event is the Anglophoner Tag. This is held jointly with four other language organisations (ITI German Network, Deutscher Terminologie-Tag, Aticom and BDÜ Hesse) and hosted in rotation by each of the five. When our turn to organise, we have held events in Aachen, Berlin, Munich and Hamburg. They typically cover a variety of language topics.

Another fixture is our annual Study Weekend, usually in September. For this we have met in different regions of Germany and beyond, again of course concentrating on language(s). We have visited for instance various places where a recognised minority language is widely spoken, such as Bautzen (Sorbian), Flensburg (Danish), Wismar ("Plattdeutsch"). We have explored Swiss German ("Schwyzerdütsch"), Luxemburgish ("Lëtzebuergesch") and language situation/integration in Frankfurt (Oder) right on the Polish-German border. More recently, there have been trips to Graz (joining members of the CIOL Cambridge Society), Colditz/Leipzig and Höchstädt ("Battle of Blenheim").

In November we traditionally hold a joint Translators' Workshop with the BDÜ Hesse, a regional association of Germany's largest association for Translators and Interpreters (BDÜ).

All our events also contain a certain social element to get to know one another and benefit from shared views and experience, particularly as, for geographical reasons, we cannot hold regular meetings very frequently.

The German Society is always happy to welcome newcomers.
