Volunteer Published on Wednesday, 30 November 2016 Parent Category: News Share page with AddThis

We are seeking two CIOL members to serve on the Editorial Board for our journal The Linguist.

The Editorial Board is delegated by CIOL Council to set the strategic direction of the journal in support of the Institute’s strategic goals, and to act in an advisory capacity to the Editor, in particular to make sure that the Editor is informed of important issues in the profession and events taking place within the Institute to ensure that these are appropriately covered in The Linguist.

In addition, members of the Editorial Board are expected to:

  • suggest suitable authors and topics to the Editor, and help the Editor to achieve an appropriate balance of articles covering the full range of issues relevant to the profession, the business of the Institute and the concerns of its members, while also attracting interest from a wider readership (including non-specialist readers);
  • offer constructive feedback on past issues of the journal in a supportive atmosphere and provide objective criticism to the Editor in order to ensure that the journal maintains a reputation for relevant, high-quality content and good writing;
  • offer advice and guidance on the design and layout of the journal;
  • act as the arbiter of the overall objective and general tenor of the Institute’s journal.

The Board meets three times a year in February, June and November, normally in the CIOL’s offices at Dunstan House. Attendance by Skype will be arranged for Board members who are unable to attend in person or who may be resident overseas. For members resident in the UK who attend in person, travel and subsistence costs will be met in accordance with the Institute’sPDF iconTravel and Subsistence Policy.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • membership of any CIOL grade. We particularly welcome applications from the new pre-professional grades - Student Affiliate, IoLET Affiliate and Career Affiliate - as they are under-represented on the Board;
  • excellent command of English;
  • good knowledge and experience of one or more areas covered by The Linguist. Current experience in languages in business and industry or public service interpreting is preferred but not essential;
  • the ability to engage positively with the Editor and other members of the Board to suggest new ideas for articles/features and possible writers, to ensure that The Linguist retains its reputation for high-quality writing across a balanced range of subject areas;
  • the ability to contribute constructively to reviews of past issues and suggest improvements where necessary;
  • the ability to think strategically about the future direction of The Linguist, and an awareness of the broader strategic aims of the Institute;
  • a commitment to attending the three annual meetings of the Board whenever possible, or to contributing in writing (or attending via Skype) if unable to attend in person;
  • a commitment to contributing to discussions and reviews via email in between and in advance of Editorial Board meetings;
  • familiarity with online publishing platforms and/or social media is preferred but not essential.

Applicants are expected to provide impartial advice and comment in accordance with CIOL's PDF iconEquality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy.

Applicants should download and complete the FileApplication Form and send it with a brief CV (no more than one side of A4) to Debbie Butler, Communications and Marketing Manager, either by email to deborah.butler@ciol.org.uk or by post to CIOL, Dunstan House, 14a St Cross Street, London EC1N 8XA.

The closing date for applications is 17h00 on Wednesday 14 December 2016.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of the shortlisting. Those shortlisted will be invited to attend a short Skype interview on Tuesday 20 December with Miranda Moore (Editor, The Linguist), Keith Moffitt (Member of CIOL Council and the Editorial Board) and Debbie Butler (Communications and Marketing Manager).

If you need more information, please email Debbie on deborah.butler@ciol.org.uk.
