CIOL seeks 2017 winner for language-learning initiative

CIOL invites nominations for the 2017 winner of the Threlford Memorial Cup – the prestigious award for inspiration and originality in language teaching and learning. The Cup is awarded annually to an individual, organisation or project that has encouraged language learning in others.

Ideal candidates might be, for instance, a teacher who has inspired young minds, a business or organisation that has led a project, or someone who works hard within the local community to keep alive a heritage language and culture.

The award has attracted a variety of outstanding winners. The current holder is Sally Fagan of Business Language Champions for her work with secondary school students, showing how languages can open up exciting career opportunities. CIOL Chief Executive Ann Carlisle described Sally as “a hugely inspiring individual and important role model for school students.” The Cup has also been awarded for Higher Education projects such as the European Master's in Translation scheme, and the business initiative Global Graduates, a website for language students preparing for their year abroad.

Nominations are freely open to all, so please download the Nomination Form and return it to comms@ciol.org.uk by Friday 28 July 2017 if you know of a truly deserving person who has gone the extra mile to encourage others to learn a language.

The Cup will be presented at an Awards Evening in central London in November, when the highest achievements in the IoL Educational Trust’s professional language exams are recognised. The awards are presented by CIOL’s Royal Patron HRH Prince Michael of Kent.
